At Renew Towns, our mission is to revitalize downtown areas by providing our City Pitch Competition and powerful, practical small business training seminars. We believe in the power of community and strive to empower local businesses through our initiatives.
What is happening to today's downtowns?
- Office overhang stifles downtown retail potential. Nationwide, the office vacancy rate has soared to around 19–20%, leaving many downtowns with idle office buildings—and underutilized storefronts that depend on office foot traffic. (Wall Street Journal, June 2025)
- Downtown attendance is still only half of pre-pandemic levels. Across major U.S. metropolitan downtowns, average weekly office attendance has stabilized at roughly 50% of pre-pandemic volumes, limiting the number of weekday customers for nearby retail establishments. (Federal Reserve, March 2024)
- Taking action to create a healthy downtown is urgent. A healthy downtown retail environment is critical, it strengthens tax base, maintains sidewalk vitality, and supports small business ecosystems. With office demand slipping, bolstering retail helps diversify downtown functionality, and create a more welcoming and vibrant community.
City Pitch Competition
City Pitch, is a storefront business pitch competition designed to fill vacant storefronts in downtown areas. We work closely with aspiring store owners to develop storefront ideas, build viable busi needed in the community. These business ideas are presented for a public vote to select the best fit for the community.
